Classic Royalty: The 1978 Ford King Cobra

In 1978, Ford took on the Pontiac Trans Am by introducing the Mustang II King Cobra complete with a deep air dam and a striking cobra emblazoned on the hood – Trans Am style. This Mustang was equipped with a V8 and was offered with an optional Fashion Accessory Package that included Southwest-style Fresno cloth seats and special pinstriping.

Ford made the King Cobra so special that they only produced 4,313 of them, and at Karl Kustoms we were lucky enough to have one of them in our shop when Scott Hansen of Ankeny, Iowa asked us to redo his motor.

Scott’s 1978 King Cobra

Scott has had this tangerine orange muscle car since his days in college – over 42 years ago – when he purchased it as a daily driver. Today, he occasionally takes the car to shows and says there is only one other car like his with the same equipment left.

He says that he’s very happy with the way it performs now that we redid the motor for him.

A shout out to Jeff; he’s incredible.”

– Scott Hansen

Since these cars are rare, you may never see one at a car show or on the street, but Scott knows they get a lot of attention when they are spotted.

I get a lot of looks from a lot of people when I’m driving down the street.”

– Scott Hansen

We can see why with its bright orange body and that stunning King Cobra decal on the hood.
