Crate Engine FAQs

If you’re looking to upgrade or replace your vehicle’s engine, you’ve probably come across the term “crate engine.” This blog will answer common questions on this topic to help you understand whether a crate engine is the right choice for you.

To get us started, let’s answer the most obvious question: what exactly is a crate engine?

A crate engine is a complete assembly shipped to you in a crate, hence the name. Depending on what crate engine package you buy, it may already be fully assembled, tested, and ready to install in a vehicle. These engines are typically new or remanufactured and can be used to replace an old engine or upgrade to higher performance

Is It Cheaper To Build An Engine Or Buy A Crate Engine?

In most cases, buying a crate engine is more cost-effective than building an engine from scratch.

You’ll need to source individual parts when you build your own engine. Custom builds often require specialized tools and significant expertise. A crate engine saves time and money by offering a tried-and-tested solution. Every Karl Kustoms crate engine is also backed by a warranty.

Are Crate Engines Rebuilt or New?

They can be either.

A new crate engine is built with all-new parts, and no used or older parts are carried over from another engine. These tend to cost more as a result.

A remanufactured (or rebuilt) engine is a previously used engine. It is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt with new or re-machined parts.

Both types are designed to perform like new, but remanufactured engines generally cost a bit less.

How Hard Is It To Install A Crate Engine?

Installing a crate engine can be straightforward for an experienced mechanic. Or even a DIYer who has researched the installation process. But you will need the right tools.

Crate engines are designed to be direct replacements for the original engine, so they often come ready to bolt into your vehicle. However, depending on your specific application, some customization or adjustments may be required.

What Is Included in a Crate Engine?

Crate engines are offered in various packages. The one you choose will depend on your specific needs.

Short Block Crate Engine

A short block is the most basic crate engine package. It includes the engine block and internal rotating assembly. But it doesn’t come with any of the top-end components (like cylinder heads or the valve train). Short block packages are ideal for those who want to customize their build and add their own heads, intake, and other components. What’s typically included:

  • Engine block
  • Crankshaft
  • Pistons
  • Connecting rods
  • Camshaft (sometimes)

Long Block Crate Engine

A long-block crate engine includes everything in a short block but adds the cylinder heads and a few other key components. It’s a more complete package, making it easier to install, and is a popular choice for engine replacements or restorations. What’s typically included:

  • Engine block
  • Crankshaft
  • Pistons
  • Connecting rods
  • Camshaft
  • Cylinder heads
  • Valve covers
  • Timing components (in most cases)

Turnkey or “Dressed” Crate Engine

A turnkey crate engine is a fully assembled and ready-to-run package. It typically includes everything you need to get the engine running. This usually means the intake manifold, fuel system, ignition system, and sometimes even the alternator. This type of engine is ideal for those who want a simple, plug-and-play solution. What’s typically included:

  • Long block components (block, rotating assembly, heads, etc.)
  • Intake manifold
  • Carburetor or fuel injection system
  • Ignition system (distributor, wires, plugs)
  • Alternator (in some packages)
  • Water pump (in some packages)
  • Harmonic balancer

What Types Of Crate Engines Can You Get?

Karl Kustoms offers a full range of cart engines to suit almost any need. These are just some of the options available:

Within these categories, you can also opt for stock or high-performance versions of certain engines. There are also E-Rod Crate Engines (Emission-Compliant Engines) for states that have strict emissions standards.

Finally, our Connect & Cruise packages are available for certain Chevrolet models. This includes the complete engine, transmission controllers and installation kit. These perfectly matched and calibrated powertrain packages come with a 24-month/50,000-mile warranty.

Are Crate Engines Reliable?

Yes, crate engines are typically very reliable. Our engines come with a comprehensive warranty should anything go wrong. The key to reliability is proper installation, maintenance, and breaking in the engine correctly. We also offer an optional dyno testing service to ensure that every component is working harmoniously before shipping.

How Do I Break In A Crate Engine?

Breaking in a crate engine is important for long-term reliability and performance. The process is the same as for any new engine.

  • Avoid high RPMs and heavy loads
  • Don’t let the engine idle for a long time
  • Try to avoid short drives where the engine doesn’t get to warm up properly
  • Perform an oil change before the first 500 miles – this helps remove any debris during the break-in period.
  • A second oil change should be done at around the 1,000 mile point.

Who Makes The Best Crate Engines?

Several major manufacturers produce high-quality crate engines. Some of the top names include:

  • GM Performance (Chevrolet): Known for small-block and big-block engines, often used in classic muscle cars as well as modern performance vehicles.
  • Ford Performance: Specializes in crate engines for Mustangs and Ford trucks.
  • Mopar: Popular for Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep applications.
  • Blueprint Engines: Offers a wide range of high-performance engines with solid warranties.

How Much Do Crate Engines Cost?

Crate engine prices vary widely depending on the type, package, and performance level. A basic remanufactured engine like our Chevy Malibu four-cylinder, starts at just over $3,000.

Our popular LS series crate engines are between $6,000 and $11,000 depending on the exact specifications chosen.

High-power engines like the 655hp Ford Performance Big Block, 807hp Mopar Hellcrate Redeye, can range between $15,000 and $25,000. The 1,004hp Chevrolet Performance ZZ632 is just over $30,000.
