We have built, modded, restored, and hot-rodded countless vehicles over the years. Each one has been special in its own way, but our 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe build that made it to the Final Forty at the 27th Summit Nationals this year stands out for the team as one of the most memorable.
The Karl Kustoms 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe Build
The car was bought by Karl Kustoms founder Carl Moyer at an auction back in 2015. At that stage, it was nothing more than a shell with a few components bolted to it. The car became a special project for Carl, and the team worked on it whenever there was a bit of spare time to be had. This went on for a few years, with the Karl Kustoms crew stripping the shell down to bare metal before painstakingly rebuilding every single component.

H&H Flatheads was tasked with building the 278 cubic inch motor, while the exhaust was fabricated in-house. Other build highlights include Wilwood disc brakes and a fully custom interior with hidden radio and a Carter digital dash. The Karl crew started by removing 70lbs of lead weight from the original body/chassis – and the build also includes:
- Custom chrome from East Tennessee Chrome
- 700r4 transmission
- Custom exhaust, drip rails, interior, and Tri-Power features
- Redline tires
- Schotts wheels
- Gas trunk shocks
Carl was a perfectionist with a vision, and the car was constantly fine-tuned and improved for years. To finish off this amazing build, Shane Vigil, Karl Kustoms painter, mixed a unique blue exterior paint, called Deep Blue Diamond, which gave the ’40 Ford Coupe even more head-turning ability.
