Sounds Of Summer Nights Favorites: A Wantable Wagon
The Sounds Of Summer Nights at Karl Kustoms features some of the coolest cars around. Whether you like modern high-performance cars, classic cruisers, or something in between, you’ll find it at one of our shows. Each car has a story to tell, and this sweet 1966 Chevy Caprice Wagon is no different.
The 1966 Chevrolet Caprice
Introduced in 1966, the Caprice replaced the Impala as the top trim level on Chevrolet’s full-size cars. It was available as a two-door or four-door hardtop, sedan, or station wagon that could seat six- or nine passengers. All models were marketed as the Caprice Custom and were available with a long list of standard features and options.
The Caprice Custom Estate featured simulated woodgrain exterior trim, a first for Chevrolet, and a style last seen on its real woodie wagon, the 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air. All wagons included an all-vinyl upholstered two-row bench seat interior with an optional third rear-facing seat for two. The Custom Estate came standard with Chevy’s 283 cubic inch V8 but could be had with the 396 cubic inch “Turbo Jet” V8 as an option. It was also possible to special order the L72, a 425-horsepower 427 cubic inch big block V8 with solid lifters, special camshaft, carburetor, and 11 to 1 compression.
This particular Chevy Caprice wagon seats nine passengers and has a rear-facing fold-down rear bench seat. The wagon’s current owner had a ’66 convertible and bought it because he decided to redo something different.
“My daughters thought it was cool back there, sitting in that rear seat! I bought it sight unseen…It’s been all over the United States.”
Originally from Colorado, it is well equipped with the original 396 cubic inch V8 and options like a tilt rally steering wheel and cruise control. Since purchasing it, the owner has taken the wagon all across the US.
