June 2020 Started Off The Summer Of Custom Cars
Here at Karl Kustoms, we’ve been serving our community for decades. We love helping to create the coolest custom cars around!
Virtual Summer Nights is our favorite time of the month to show off all kinds of custom cars.
This June had plenty to offer. From a ride-along in Carl Moyer’s Mercury to interviewing some of our wonderful customers, we just can’t get enough.
Ride-Along In Carl Moyer’s ’47 Mercury
First, Carl takes us for a ride in his beautiful 1947 Mercury Convertible. Carl and crew are headed to check out the Corvette collection of a friend.
Steve, the owner of the collection, shares all sorts of fun information regarding his collection including how he bought one of his custom cars with only four seconds left on an eBay auction.
“I barely made it through high school, and I don’t have a college education. But, I knew how to work and I know how to save money. That’s how I ended up getting what I have today. Just save a little, spend a little.”

On another stop, Carl meets with another Carl, the proud owner of a ’67 Chevelle SS. Our Chevelle-loving friend mentions that it is the seventh Chevelle that he’s owned in his lifetime. When he’s not playing with his Chevelle, he also loves to participate in valve cover racing.
Head Painter Ed Birmingham
Later, we caught up with Karl Kustoms head painter Ed Birmingham. Birmingham is a self-taught airbrush artist who’s immensely talented.
He started off by painting motocross helmets for local racers in his spare time. After going full-time with painting, Birmingham received a lot of business, especially from the custom motorcycle world.
Birmingham’s been with us for nearly 12 years now and we couldn’t have asked for a better artist. One thing that sets him apart is his ability to help customers visualize their projects. He does so by adding paint, graphics, and more to their car in the computer before ever touching the vehicle.
Engine Dyno Room
Next, we visited Kelly Tapper, our machine shop manager, for a tour of the engine dyno room. Tapper shows just how useful the dyno can be for breaking in engines, diagnostics, tuning, and more.
Tapper also shows just how useful the computer is in reading and plotting live data. Using this data, our dyno crew can adjust each car’s tuning to get that much-desired power bump.
Customers Show Off Their Custom Cars
On our last stop, we check in with a few of our current customers.
One of the coolest rides currently in our shop belongs to Dan. Dan has a 1979 Corvette L82. He mentions that while it might sound like something special, it was released during the oil crisis and only boasts a mere 225 hp.
When he bought the vehicle it had only 25k miles. Thirty-six years later, the odometer reads 30k. Dan is in the middle of having his Corvette fully refreshed with modern performance upgrades.
